Household bleach for your pool – you can use that too!

I’m really excited about this post!!  This tip alone could save you tons of $$$$.  Yes you read that right, you can use household bleach to sanitize your pool!   Say What!?!

When I share with people that they can you use regular household bleach to chlorinate their pools, they look at me like I’ve got 10 heads!

It’s true!  Chlorine is chlorine – even regular ol’ bleach!

Here’s a few things to look for when buying bleach.

Tip#1-  Make sure it’s at least 8.25% Sodium Hypochlorite.  Name brand, or  generic doesn’t matter.  It just needs to be 8.25% Sodium Hypochlorite.  You will find the active ingredients on the label.  Just look for Sodium Hypochlorite.

Tip#2– Make sure you buy unscented plain regular bleach

Tip #3 – Watch the dates.  There will be dates on the boxes or bottles.  If it has been sitting in a hot warehouse for a year, it may not be any good.  Bleach has a shelf life of 12 months from the date of manufacture.  Store your chlorine or bleach in a 70 degree or cooler area.

Tip#4– Shop by price. Sometimes we use the Kem Tek liquid chlorine, and sometimes we use household bleach.  We just watch sales.  If you can get a gallon for $3.00 or less that is a really good deal! $2.50 or less that’s a steal!

I’m working on writing a post all about how much chlorine you will need for your pool.

Stay tuned!!
